Andersen Window
Series Compared

100, 200, 400, A-Series and E-Series, explained by the people who install all five

Andersen builds five window series for different budgets and kinds of house. As an Andersen Premier Partner we carry every one of them, which means we can tell you which series your home needs without steering you toward the only one we sell.

100 Series

Fibrex composite. Andersen's smart alternative to vinyl, and the best value in the lineup.

Exterior
Fibrex composite (wood fiber + polymer), twice as strong as vinyl
Interior
Fibrex, with matching or white interior finish
Colors
A focused palette including white, sandtone, dark bronze, and black

Styles

Double-hungSingle-hungGlidingCasementAwningPictureSpecialty shapesGliding patio doors

Best for

  • Whole-house replacements on a budget
  • Modern looks in black
  • Basements, baths, and rentals
  • Anyone who never wants to paint a window

Our take

The 100 Series is what we recommend when the budget matters and the frames are sound. Fibrex does not rot, warp, or need paint, and it comes in black at a price vinyl cannot match for the look. The trade-off is a slimmer range of styles and no real wood inside.

200 Series

The warmth of wood at an uncommon value, in a streamlined selection.

Exterior
Vinyl cladding over a wood frame
Interior
Natural pine
Colors
White and sandtone exteriors

Styles

Tilt-wash double-hungGlidingPictureNarroline gliding patio doors

Best for

  • Straightforward double-hung replacements
  • Matching existing Andersen 200 Series units
  • Projects that want wood inside without the full 400 catalog

Our take

Think of the 200 Series as the 400 Series with the options list trimmed to the most popular choices. If a traditional double-hung in white is what the house needs and you want a pine interior, it is a sensible middle step.

Best for

  • Westchester colonials, capes, and Tudors
  • Whole-house replacements where the look matters
  • Projects that mix many window styles
  • Homeowners who want wood they can stain or paint

Our take

This is the series we install most, and the one we would put in our own homes. It covers nearly every style, the wood interior takes paint or stain beautifully, and the exterior cladding has held up on Westchester houses for decades. When someone asks which Andersen window to buy, the honest default answer is the 400 Series.

A-Series

The architectural line. Andersen's best-performing, most energy-efficient windows.

Exterior
Fiberglass and Fibrex composite exterior, with a wide color range
Interior
Pine, maple, oak, cherry, and fir, with factory finishes available
Colors
An extended exterior palette, plus prefinished interior colors and stains

Best for

  • Additions and new construction
  • Larger openings and combination units
  • Architect-designed projects
  • Homeowners who want the best energy numbers, including triple-pane and Passive House certified options

Our take

When a project has drawings, the A-Series is usually where we land. It handles the big combination units and odd sizes that the 400 Series cannot, the factory finishes save a painter, and Andersen rates it as its best-performing, most energy-efficient line, with triple-pane and PHIUS-certified options.

Interior
A wide choice of wood species, including options for historic matching
Colors
50 standard exterior colors plus custom-matched colors

Styles

Best for

  • Historic restorations and landmarked homes
  • Estate and custom new construction
  • Unusual shapes and very large openings
  • Exact color matches to existing architecture

Our take

The E-Series, which Andersen built from its former Eagle line, is for the house where nothing standard will do. We specify it on historic restorations where a profile has to match and on high-end new builds where the architect has drawn something specific. It is the most expensive series and, for those projects, the right one.

Which Series for Which House

Our default recommendation, by home

These are starting points, not rules. The in-home consultation is where we check the frames, the architecture, and the budget and settle on a series per opening. But after 30 years in Westchester, Putnam, and Fairfield County, this is usually where we end up.

Colonial, Cape, or Tudor

400 Series

Tilt-wash or Woodwright double-hungs with a wood interior and colonial grilles. The look these houses were built for.

Modern or contemporary

100 Series or E-Series

Black Fibrex frames at an accessible price, or E-Series for oversized fixed glass and custom colors.

Addition or new construction

A-Series

Combination units, factory finishes, and the best energy ratings. Easy to coordinate with drawings.

Historic or landmarked

E-Series

Custom profiles, matched colors, and shapes that satisfy a historic review board.

Rental, basement, or budget refresh

100 Series

No painting, no rot, egress-friendly sizes, and the lowest cost per opening in the lineup.

Matching older Andersen windows

200 or 400 Series

Same sightlines and colors as the units already in the house, including Narroline conversion kits.

A Common Mix-Up

Andersen 400 Series is not Renewal by Andersen

Homeowners often get a Renewal by Andersen quote and assume that is the only way to buy Andersen. It is not. Renewal is a separate Andersen-owned company that sells one Fibrex product directly to homeowners with its own installers. The five series on this page are Andersen's dealer lines, sold through contractors like us.

The practical differences: with the dealer lines you can choose a real wood interior, pick from far more styles and colors, get an itemized quote per opening, and hire a local contractor you can check references on. As an Andersen Premier Certified Contractor, our installation also carries Andersen's 2-year installation warranty.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Andersen series is the best value?

For most replacement projects, the 100 Series. Andersen prices it in the same $$ tier as the 200 Series, but Fibrex composite frames outperform vinyl, never need paint, and come in black and dark bronze. If you want real wood inside, the 400 Series is the value pick because it covers nearly every style and holds up for decades.

What is the difference between Andersen 400 Series and Renewal by Andersen?

They are different businesses. Renewal by Andersen is a separate Andersen-owned company that sells and installs its own Fibrex-only replacement window directly to homeowners, with its own installers and all-in pricing. The 100, 200, 400, A-Series, and E-Series are Andersen's dealer lines, installed by independent contractors like Sunrise Carpentry. The 400 Series gives you a wood interior, more style choices, and competitive, itemized pricing from a local contractor you can check references on.

Is the A-Series worth the extra cost over the 400 Series?

On a standard colonial replacement, usually not. On an addition, a new build, or a home with large combination windows, often yes. The A-Series offers more sizes, factory interior finishes, a wider color palette, and what Andersen rates as its best-performing, most energy-efficient windows, including triple-pane options. We lay out both options at the estimate so you can see the difference per opening.

What is Fibrex?

Fibrex is Andersen's proprietary composite of reclaimed wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It is about twice as strong as vinyl, which allows slimmer frames and more glass, and it does not rot, pit, corrode, or need painting. It is the frame material for the 100 Series and the exterior cladding on the A-Series and the 400 Series Woodwright.

Can I mix series on the same house?

Yes, and it is common. A 400 Series across the front elevation with 100 Series in the basement and baths, for example. The exterior colors are coordinated across series so the house reads as one. We flag any profile differences that would show side by side.

What warranty comes with Andersen windows?

On the 400 Series, Andersen's limited warranty covers the insulated glass for 20 years and non-glass components for 10 years. Each series carries its own Andersen warranty terms, and Andersen's Owner-to-Owner coverage transfers to a new owner when the home sells. As an Andersen Premier Partner we add Andersen's 2-year limited installation warranty on top, and we handle any claim directly with Andersen.
